Grand Turk Island
Grand Turk Island is constantly rated as some of the best diving vacation spots in the world.
The continental shelf plunges 7,000 feet just a few hundred yards from shore. Coral reefs and crystal clear water make diving conditions great. Grand Turk is located north of the Dominican Republic and west of Cuba. Note: To find inexpensive vacation ideas for dive vacations see:

It is the largest of the Turks islands (not the Caicos) and it has the territory’s capital which is Cockburn Town. The third largest coral reef in the world is located at Grand Turk.
The entire western shore of the island is a protected underwater park. There are whale sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, groupers, sponges beautiful coral and more. If you are not a diver, and want to enjoy the beauty of the underwater playground there are a couple of options.
1. You can snorkel
There are snorkeling tours where you can have the opportunity to enjoy the sun, water and see some beautiful sea life.
2. Grand Turk Helmet Dive
A constant air supplied helmet allows you to walk around on the ocean floor.
Interesting Tidbits about Grand Turk It is thought that this was possibly where Christopher Columbus may have landed when he discovered the New World in 1492. In 1962 John Glenn’s Friendship 7 Mercury Spacecraft landed near Grand Turk off the southeast shoreline. This gave Grand Turk international attention. There is a replica of the Friendship 7 is on display in Grand Turk at the entrance to the Grand Turk airport.
