On our trip to Santorini we walked to the top and had a great time. The friendliness of the people, the incredible views and the great weather all made for a fantastic day.
Santorini should not be missed if the opportunity to visit presents itself. There are many beautiful shops are located at the top of this volcanically formed island paradise.
This is a favorite spot of some of the cruise lines for obvious reasons. Cruise ships drop anchor in the sea and then shuttle excited passengers to the base of the island in boats.
Santorini from the Sea
Once passengers have arrived at the base of the island it is fun to visit a few shops and take in the sites. After a bit of time here most people go to the top where all the prime shops are.
The base of Santorini
There are three choices to get to the top.
There is a switchback path to the top of the island that can be reached by foot for the hearty traveler (just be careful of the road apples!). Or, you can rent a mule to take you up. A third method is to take a cable car.
Each method has its own sense of adventure.
The mules are fun for some people and others don't seem to enjoy the bumpy ride. It is all a matter of choice.
It takes around 25-35 minutes to walk up or down if you walk briskly. The walk is relatively steep.
There are plenty of places to rest and take in the panoramic deep blue ocean with boats continually shuttling to and from the island.
I have walked up and down this path on two separate occasions and thoroughly enjoyed both adventures with the breath taking views along the way.
Upon reaching the top there are plenty of shops with wonderful curios, places to eat, and even a couple of ice cream shops. All of the shop owners are friendly and helpful and a good time is always had by all.
When we were at an ice cream shop the stop owner related a funny story to us about a kiss he stole from a patron one day. See below.
Santorini Greece is a place that must be seen on vacation to be believed. The breathtaking views, friendly people, relaxed atmosphere all make this a five goose bump experience!
