The down side to Cozumel is that it is one of the busiest cruise ports with up to 16 ships visiting a day in high season.

The port town of San Miguel is small and easy to walk around but it becomes way overcrowded.

Chichen Itza
This is the largest and most popular of the Yucatán ruins. It was founded in 445 A.D. and at its height had about 50,000 residents.

The most famous Chichen Itza ruins is the El Castillo pyramid which was build with the Maya calendar in mind. Northwest of El Castillo is Chich’en’s main ball court. It is the largest and best preserved of the Maya ruins anywhere.

To the right of the ball court is the Temple of the Skulls (Tzompantli). It has rows of skulls carved into the stone platform.

Scuba Diving
In 1961 Jacques Cousteau stated that Cozumel was one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas in the world. Diving is definitely on of the most fun things to do in Cozumel.

There is a wide array of tropical fish, wonderful reefs, great visibility, (100-200 feet –depending on the season, underwater caves and amazing drift diving.

I had dove several times before going to Cozumel, but this is where I finally understood why people loved diving so much. We were on a drift dive and relaxing taking in the underwater sights as we drifted along slowly.

It was incredibly relaxing, entertaining and just plain fun. When my air was low I surfaced and let out a yell of happiness! I finally understood why so many people enjoy diving so much!

Xcaret Eco Park Cancun
This theme park has small Maya ruins scattered about. The park has an aquarium, a sea turtle breeding facility, a Maya village and more. Visitors can put on life jackets and use snorkel gear to ride the current through a kilometer of well lit underground caves. Or they can put on Star Trek helmets and walk on the ocean floor. It is located in Cancun.
